Sweden’s TTS – Dry Cargo Division, Gothenburg, part of Norway’s TTS marine ASA, has won an order from Norwegian shipowner Wilh Wilhelmsen/Wallenius Lines
Sweden’s TTS – Dry Cargo Division, Gothenburg, part of Norway’s TTS marine ASA, has won an order from Norwegian shipowner Wilh Wilhelmsen/Wallenius Lines for the cargo access equipment onboard a series of four (4) 6,500 unit pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) building at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Ulsan.
The newbuildings, Hull Nos 1694/5 and S288/89, are to be built at the Ulsan shipyard (two vessels) and at Samho shipyard (two vessels). The ships will be operated by Wilh Wilhelmsen (1), Wallenius (1) and Tailwind (2). The ships are due for delivery during April and December 2006 and August and October 2008.
Under a design, build and install contract, the TTS equipment comprises:
· Stern ramp and door
· Side ramp and door
· Three (3) movable ramps with covers
· Seven (7) movable ramps without covers
· Pilot door (port side)
· Hydraulic system
· Electrical system
All the equipment is designed to adhere to the rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV), and will also comply with all of the relevant safety conventions for such vessels.
Each vessel will have a total of 12 decks for loading. Cars will enter/leave the vessels on Deck No. 5 via a stern ramp (max load 150 t), located on the vessel’s port side, or a side ramp (max load 22 tonnes), also lowering onto the vessel’s port side.
The quarter ramp (and combined weather-tight door) is constructed in three sections. Flaps will be provided at the forward and aft ends and between section 1 and 2 (if necessary) to provide smooth transition between the ramp and ship, and the quay, to distribute the load forces between the ramp and the quay. The 39.7 m long three-sectional stern ramp is hydraulically operated and will provide weather-tightness to the stern opening. The driveway has a width of 7 m minimum, and a clear height of 5.3 m.
The two-sectional side ramp is also wire-operated and is 25 m in length, with a width of driveway of 6.5 m. Although the side door is arranged for loading/unloading operations on Deck 5, it is also possible to use the ramp from Deck 6 when necessary.
There are hydraulically-operated hoistable ramps and covers in Decks 3, 7 and 9; a movable ramp to Deck 4; a movable ramp and cover on Deck 5; and movable ramps in Decks 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12.
Norway's TTS Marine ASA comprises three divisions - Material Handling (Drobak), Marine Cranes (Bergen) and Dry Cargo Handling (Sweden). Part of the Dry Cargo Division, TTS Ships Equipment AB, located in Gothenburg, is designated the RoRo equipment 'Centre of Excellence'.
